Tech Tips for Dads & Grads

Tech expert, Corey Greenberg, joined the Go To Market Show to talk about the latest technologies and gift ideas for recent grads and for dads celebrating Father's Day.

When it comes to dads, Corey admits that men are likely to buy gadgets on their own and not wait for Father's Day. It's just the nature of men and their toys. But if he was to recommend one gift this year, it would be a small-priced gadget that delivers tons of value. Starting at just $59.99 (with a top-end model at $99.99), Roku opens up a world of affordable entertainment. Roku is a little box that allows you to instantly stream programming on your TV. Watch movies and TV shows from Netflix, Hulu Plus or Amazon Instant Video, listen to music on Pandora, catch the latest ballgame, and more. It's all available whenever you want it.

For grads, whether entering college or the world of work, a good computer is a must have. Here, Greenberg recommends a couple of options. For those looking for a workhorse computer, a laptop is a great way to get lots of things done (including tasks like graphic design that demand computing power). Plus, it can easily be toted to the student union, the coffee shop or wherever work needs to be done.

A second option is to go the tablet route. Portability and usability are among the benefits of tablet PC's, including the ability to use the device as an e-book reader.  While Apple's iPad is the category leader, tablets running Google's Android operating system are closing ground. Motorola was the leader among Android tablets, but Greenberg thinks Acer may have pushed ahead with their Iconia A-500 device. It's cheaper than the iPad or Motorola Zoom and provides good functionality. For Android machines, that includes smooth integration with Google Apps - which is wildly popular for its mail, calendar and document apps.  Folks who don't like the touch screen keyboard can use an external wireless device to speed up their typing.

While some e-readers (notably Nook Color from Barnes & Noble) are trying to sneak in on the tablet space they fall short in many accounts. Greenberg is still a fan of Amazon's original e-reader, Kindle, as the company pioneered e-ink technology. In fact, he runs the Kindle reader app on his tablet.

The next wave of innovation Greenberg sees is in the compact camera space. Smart phones, with camera and video capabilities, started to encroach on the compact camera space. Camera makers are responding with more features. Greenberg recommends checking out the Lumix FH20, with 14 megapixels, better zoom, extra wide lens, and HD movie features just to name a few. It's a great example of the coming trend packing more power into compact cameras.
